Fat 13” spot and one that really put up a fight on the
6 wt. That is what I love about this fish, it will give you all it’s got on any
weight fly rod you may be using.
The first spot of the morning, which gave Charles a
fight on his 5 weight; both fish were released because they fell into the slot limited
the lake enforces.
Even the bull bluegills couldn’t resist the Boogle
Bugs on top in this cold water this morning. This guys is worthy of the quest,
because he gave my 6 weight a respectable bend. I am now 49 away from the quest.
The full moon will be on the 27th. this month and that is when
the bluegill action will really heat up on this lake, I am counting the days.
I love Boogle Bugs. I haven't had much luck with water less than 65 or so and poppers except with spotted bass on streams. I'm still fishing deeper holes on streams. I bought my yearly supply of Boogle Bugs back in January.
ReplyDeleteWonderful, Bill, that you are getting some surface activity already. Those are nice fish. Congratulations on taking one of the (50)on this years goal. For what it is worth, supposed snow 4 - 6"'s tomorrow on the Front Range in Colorado. Woe is me...............
ReplyDeleteRod benders there Bill.
ReplyDeleteNice fish.
We went to Smith Lake today. Spent most of the time trying to fish with poppers and stealth bombers... but didn't get any bass on top. Kelly got one decent Bluegill. Fished a little bit with the baitcaster and picked up one 12" bass... but we can't to any really great spots in the kayaks... and of course we didn't have you as a guide!

ReplyDeleteThese are the first bass I have landed using the fly rod in water that cold. I will going back Monday and see if I can tie into some a little bigger. Thanks for the comment

ReplyDeleteI can't believe you guys still have snow out that way. Hopefully you will get on the water soon and land some nice gills. Thanks for the comment

ReplyDeleteThe spot rivals the smallmouth when it comes to rod benders. Thanks for the comment
Jay
ReplyDeleteI assume you are talking about Saturday. The wind is a killer on the lake right now. I had to move constantly to stay out of the wind Friday. We missed out on most of the action because we were late getting on the water. Smith is an early and late afternoon surface action lake. It will be awesome as the water warms close to 70 degrees. Daylight is some of the very best times to fish the poppers. Let me know when you are ready to go.
Well that gill sure is a beauty Bill. I was going to try a short trip today, but as Mel mentioned I'm watching it snow as I write this. Can't win for losing!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like fun. I need to do some warm water fishing this summer... it might shock my readers! Lol. I've only caught trout thus far...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fish, Bill. Love the color on those spotted bass. Boogle Bugs are the bomb, I need to restock the box with some.

ReplyDeleteI am wondering if you guys will ever get over winter. Thanks for the comment
