I use to fish sparingly with
the fly rod back during my early days in Mississippi . I was too busy fishing my bait casting combo for
largemouth bass mostly from my small aluminum boat. Little did I know that when
I lived there that there were 100’s of small streams in the state that was a
fly fisherman's dream. This fact really hit home the other day when I was reading
the Outdoor Sports section of the Clarion Ledger the largest newspaper in Mississippi . Rex Jones a documentary film maker at Ole Miss had
put together a fantastic piece on fly fishing streams in Mississippi . The documentary features David Frazier an avid warm water fly
fisherman who has fished some of the best streams in the state for bluegill,
spotted bass and largemouth bass. After watching the video, I discovered I missed
out on some great stream fishing using the fly rod in Mississippi when I lived there. Hope you enjoy the
video much as I did; it is worth the watch.
Bill, thanks for sharing. Very cool to see a video about fly fishing in MS. Kelly and I fished the Strong River near D'Lo a bunch and the Bowie River near Hattiesburg, but never the Chunky River... although we've driven over it quite a few times. It was a nice video, but you would think he would have caught at least one sunfish for the camera... and where were the poppers? Anybody who doesn't use poppers for bass and bream is really missing out.
ReplyDeleteJay
DeleteI do use poppers on occassions . That was not a day they would work very well , no sun light and it was a cold rainy day in November. I used bugs that have produced in the past. The fly gods just didnt want it to happen.....Thanks for watching the video.... David
Bill,
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. It was thoroughly enjoyable even for a western trout fisherman! That river is beautiful and looks as good as anything I've seen anywhere.
Jay
ReplyDeleteHe did say at the end of the clip that it really didn't brother him, that he came up short as far as landing a fish. I think he was trying to convey to the viewer one can enjoy the trip and the surroundings without landing a fish. I agree I always want to land at least one fish, but I have been on numerous trips where the fish in not to be had. thanks for the comment
Howard
ReplyDeleteThat river is beautiful and seems to have a lot of room for the back cast. Fishing a small stream or a river is one of my goals for the coming year---glad you enjoyed the video---Thanks for the comment
thanks for the link, sounds like its time for a road trip back there
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this. You probably have more knowledge of great places to fish because you lived there. You'll have to plan a trip back some time.
ReplyDeleteBlake
ReplyDeleteMy stream fishing will have to be done in Alabama, but it is always good to see some great fishing trips from the state I was born in. Thanks for the comment
Kevin
ReplyDeleteThe only time I go back is to crappie fish with my brother; the video brought back some fond memories. Thanks for the comment
Wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThe man says it all.
Thanks.
Alan
ReplyDeleteI have to agree this is a fantastic video!!!
You never know what the waters will hold, especially when you pull something out as people look bewildered as a fly fisherman is plucking fish out of a nasty little neighborhood pond. I've been to MS a few times and hadn't thought much about fly fishing there but I'll fish anything. With that aluminum boat, you coulda been snatching bass anywhere!
ReplyDeleteJosh
ReplyDeleteThe only place I fished with the aluminum boat was on small lakes in Mississippi. What makes me sick is I had some fantastic streams near where I lived but never fished them with the fly. I wish I had fished the fly rod more when I was younger, now that I am in my 60's I cherish every moment I get to fish the fly anywhere now. Thanks for the comment
Great video Bill. Love those warmwater streams.
ReplyDeleteTy
ReplyDeleteThis video proves that one doesn't have to land a fish to experience a good day on the water. Thanks for the comment
Bill,
ReplyDeleteI'm the producer of SIZE DON'T MATTER. Thanks for watching, commenting, and linking!

Hi David
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome, I am always glad to post any video that involves fishing streams with the fly rod. My wife and I were born and raised in Mississippi. The state still has a special place in our hearts. Thanks for the comment
Bill
ReplyDeleteI want to thank you for posting the video. I qlso thank everyone for watching and am very happy that everone enjoyed it. Yes i do wish i would have brought a gonzo fish to hand , and i am sorry for that . ReplyDeleteBill I look forward to meeting you someday..
ReplyDeleteMy name is Jerremy,
ReplyDeleteReal nice video and a very nice looking stream. I found this video in search of places to fly fish in Mississippi. My type of work has brought me to meridian, ms. Very close to the chunky river. Thanks for the video. Hope to see you out there sometime David. I will be making my first trip there this weekend.
Hi Jeremy
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the video and I hope you land a bunch this weekend. Thanks for the comment
I spent around 5 hours on the chunky river today at dunns falls and it was everything the video made it out to be. Caught a few long ear sunfish, some bream and one smallie. Felt like I had the whole place to my self. I will definitely be goin back soon.
DeleteJerrmey
ReplyDeleteGlad you was able to connect with some gills and smallies. thanks for the comment
I have not fished the Chunky but many of the formerly great feeder streams to it are now literally filled with sand. Is there anything being done to remedy this. I used to enjoy Tallashua and some of its feeders but they are now almost un-fishable.
ReplyDeleteFr.
ReplyDeleteMany of the streams are unfishable now that the big timber companies have come in and cut timber into the creeks; thus causing the creeks to wash out of their banks and leaving nothing but sand bottoms in a lot of the creeks. Really a shame that this has happened, I guess that is the prize we pay for big timber companies taking over a lot of the land. thanks for the comment
