Gifts You Need and Those You Don't

I know we all get things for Christmas that we really need and of course we all get things that we just don’t use or don’t need. Well I got both but the gift I was pleased with most was my “Nymphing by the Numbers video with Kelly Galloup. This video not only has some excellent information on nymphing but has some added information on dry fly fishing as well. I must confess I am still in the learning process when it comes to nymphing. The different nymphing techniques on this video are easy to understand and the plus is Kelly is actually landing trout in the process.

After watching the segment on dry flies it got me to thinking about my favorite dry fly the Parachute Adams. I know this fly has been used by most all of the fly fisherman out there. I guess the reason the fly is so popular is the white wing post which makes it so easy to see. Another feature is the fact it float really high in the water. The size 14 is my choice because it seems to fit the areas I fish most. I have landed trout on this fly when nothing else would produce. So there you have it with my favorite gift for this year, what was yours? I hope everyone had a great Christmas. Happy New Year!!!!

since you asked, I would have to say the my favorite gift this year was a lightweight rain jacket. zips up into its pocket and will be easy to carry around. looking forward to putting it to good use.

  4. Ditto on the parachute Adams. That's probably my most used dry fly, especially on the big tailwaters around here. One of the best dry flies ever.

Guess my favorite gift is a Cabela's gift card. Need some new fly line, so that card will come in handy.

Hope you post about some the stuff you learn from that Galloup video. Sounds great.

  5. Howard sounds like a country song. I got this new computer I'm writing on, but you already know that. I did get a new book called "The complete book of Western Hatches", so watch out, I plan on not being so Entomology stupid this year.

  6. Ok, you have heard this before, Bill! When I spent my time fly fishing, the Parachute Adams in size #14 was without a doubt my favorite dry fly. Why? It just flat out catches a lot of fish in Eastern Idaho. Did do quite a bit of nymphing too. Once learned, it is a deadly technique for fishing trout. Suffice to say, I never considered myself a deadly nympher. Anyway, received a new Tying Vise and tools with an assortment of materials. Will be spending some time tying up a bunch of Jigs this winter and getting all "Jiggy with it" as much as I can.

  13. I had the best Christmas I've had in years. My boys got me this infrared heater and a new deluxe shelter and rod from the ice fishing section of The Sportsman's Guide. Then the three of us took a weekend ice fishing trip like we did when they were just kids. It was the best gift I could have asked for without a doubt.
