Considering Fly LInes, Tippets and Leaders

Fly fishing can be just as technical as bass fishing with one exception the computerized equipment. To be successful at fly fishing you need to know something about the equipment and all the accessories that is a part of fly fishing. I still get confused sometimes trying to match the tippet size, with the leader, the fly size, and the hook size verses the leader or the tippet size, not to mention the rod type to compliment the fly reel. So with that said I thought I would share with everyone a link I found on the Orvis website. There is some really good information on line, leaders, and tippets on the site. One can never learn enough about fly fishing. I find I learn something every time I get out on the water.

  1. I have been toying with the idea of getting started in flyfishing. Seems there is a lot of technical stuff about it.

Yes it can be technical--a piece of advice, don't go and spend a ton of money to get into fly fishing to get started. Academy Sports has some really good beginners fly rods, and reels to get started all under 75.00. Get use to using this set-up and if you think fly fishing is really something you want to pursue then invest in a more up scale rod and reel.

  3. Hi Bill. Mark from Northern California Trout. I agree with your response to Owl. I started with a combo from LL Bean (because of a book I got for my birthday, but that's another story)and have added from there. I would also suggest that Owl purchase flies at the start and then if all goes well, take a fly tying class.

  4. Hi Shoreman
I agree with you. I started exactly how I told owl to start, and I am glad I did. I am still working on the fly tying class---hope to get back to class in the winter. Thanks for the comment.
