W...Turtle is a good guess, but I'm with Jeff...
We see this most often in waters that have birds of prey that feed on fish...like seagulls, osprey, herons, loons. In most lakes it is rare to see fish like this, but in other waters it is fairly common.FishnDavehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12224770232081356438noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8518971929369280752.post-12769343919058286682011-02-13T10:19:36.594-05:002011-02-13T10:19:36.594-05:00Jimmy

My thinking on it and looking at this guy I would have it is a possibility is that they survived a talon from a bird. I dont have pike or anything like it in this river so I am guessing a bird tried to make him dinner.

Jeff
www.gotflyfishing.blogspot.comJ and M Flieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16235012084948641643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8518971929369280752.post-72465027030525548232011-02-11T19:59:19.419-05:002011-02-11T19:59:19.419-05:00Mark

I would also guess that it happened when the fish was rather young, because it looks so perfectly healed. I agree with Jeff, it could have been a toothy fish like a pike (or pickerel if in the South), but it could also have been a turtle. Turtles have a more shearing kind of bite than just about any other animal out there. If it was something with teeth... I guess it could have also been a Piranha. They can make a pretty clean bite.Jayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08288928187563951613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8518971929369280752.post-62970674315382742092011-02-11T11:25:08.247-05:002011-02-11T11:25:08.247-05:00Jeff
