Not Everyday on the Lake can be a Stellar Day

Has anyone notice that one can’t have a fantastic fish catch on every trip. Today’s excursion was one of those outings. I went back to Walker County Lake today for what I thought would be another stellar day. Well, the fish won out today. I was late getting started and the wind took over about an hour into the trip and never let up all day. I did manage to land a decent crappie and some medium size female bluegills before lunch. After lunch, it was changing fly after fly, and yes that included the Gnat. Today it produced one crappie and a bull bluegill medium size and that was it for the Gnat today. I notice that the lake was still falling and the transition of the spawn was taking place because there were too many medium-size female bream around the edge and in the back of most of the nooks. The big males were nowhere to be found. They had moved back into the deep water, waiting for the females to drop their eggs, so I feel that this was the case today. I do think that next week will be the time to be on this lake for super bluegill action. The water temps will be between 75 and 80 and that is the magic number for the spawn to begin. At that time the big males will begin to move onto the beds and the action should be furious. Today the temps never reached 73. Another factor affecting the spawn for next week will be the moon phase which will be full. So check back for what I hope to be a better report.

    Agreed. You make the best you can of what is available. I especially like the fact you dug out fish no matter what. Good days, bad days…being out there is what counts.

    The water temps Friday was reading 73, still a little too cool to get the gills on the bed. I do think next week will be better. I need to catch what I am going to put in the freezer in the next 2 to 3 weeks, why?? because when they hit the beds everybody in Jasper is on the water in and around every bend, in every nook and on every point. In other words they clean out the bedding bluegill in about a week.

    Well, needless to say. "Sometimes The Fish Win." Sorry, Bill, but you brought it up. I am jealous. I am quite aways away from having a (73) degree day let alone water temperature anywhere near that close. Something tells me that next week you will be in for a great time!

    I hope things work out for a better trip next week. I am looking forward to some of your trout trips out that way soon. Just to be in those surroundings out there is a plus, not to mention the trout activity. Thanks for the comment.

    Sometimes its great to catch a ton of fish, sometimes its nice just to catch one or even just a few fish, and then there's the days its nice just to be out. The key is to not let the slow bite spoil your time!

    I use to get really upset if I didn't go and catch a bunch of fish. Now days its more about being outdoors and enjoying nature, and the fish is a plus. Thank for the comment
