The Bluegill Spawn is Over For This Year

Well another spawning bluegill fishing season has come and gone without me reaching my quest of landing fifty super size bluegill during the spawn. I can be somewhat content knowing I landed some nice bull gills this year that gave my 3 and 4 weight fly rods quite a workout.

This season added a few more poppers, as if I needed more flies, to my collection including the Barr Nunn popper. This was the popper that proved that color really makes a difference at times during the spawn. I will be back in action for another season next year, and hopefully reach my goal. I ended this season 23 short of my goal.

This colorful Pumpkinseed sunfish was one of the last gills I brought to hand for this season----looking forward to next spring!!

  1. Another enjoyable year sitting on the sidelines watching Bill. Is it not possible to still catch those bulls?

  2. Here in Colorado, I have not had a good Bluegill season period. As I told you previously, I would love to have the opportunity to fish for just a handful of those big 'Gills. Applaud you, Bill, for the great effort and for sharing with all of us readers.

  3. You get an "A" for effort, Bill, and for catching a nice bunch of sunnies anyway. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Maybe the bulls are done for the year, but there are still a bunch of those little guys to make a day of fun with your 3 wt.

  6. Done fishing already? I'm sure that they will take a streamer of some sorts if fished at the correct depht.

Thanks for all the support this season, and yes a few big bulls can be caught from now until late fall, but one has to go extremely deep to land a those. I am talking 30 feet or more for the big ones, which is some deep water and very slow fishing with a nymph. Thanks for the comment

I appreciate all your comments on my quest this year. I have a feeling those ponds you live close to has some big bluegill lurking in them. I would be in one of them early next year as soon as the bluegill start spawning, which gives you a chance of landing some quality fish. Thanks for the comment

The sunfish has to be the prettiest of all bluegills I land. Thanks for the comment

Those small hand size gills are fun on the 3 weight, but the big bulls are at another level. Thanks for following the quest this year

Those big bulls are way too deep to fish with a streamer, even a beadhead nymph is tough and super slow. Thanks for the comment

I use to land pumpkinseeds much bigger when I was a boy fishing small creeks back home in Mississippi. Thanks for the comment

  16. There's always next year! Perhaps, if you don't have one already, you could pick up a nice glass rod on ebay to use next year for bluegills.

Thanks for the advice concerning the glass fly rod, but I have made a commitment not to buy any more fly rods, the rest of my fishing days---I hope I can follow through--thanks for the comment
