Lanyard Verses Fly Fishing Vest Which Do You Choose

When is the best time to use a fly fishing vest verses a Lanyard on one of your many fishing outings? I know some may say that if it’s a short trip you might as well go light and use the Lanyard over the vest, but just as sure as you do you get on the water needing something that was left in the vest. On the other hand sometimes the Lanyard is just what you need for that hour trip or is it? That is the question of the day for you guys. I would like some input on your reasoning why one would use the vest over the Lanyard or the Lanyard over the vest.
I do know for the money these items are cheaper than your traditional vest. I must confess I have never use a Lanyard. I do know the vest can get fairly heavy if you are on the water for a while.
I thought I would throw in this clip of an outing in a country setting enjoy!!!!

  1. Hi Bill
I don't use a lanyard or a vest, but an old military ammo pack strapped around my waist.

I don't use a vest when I am warm water fishing, because I have everything in a a small zip pack. The ammo sound like less packing and lighter.

  3. I'm a pack person myself. Chest pack, sling pack, whatever...depending on what I need to bring.

However to answer your question, if it were cool or cold, think I'd be more apt to do the lanyard thing, as long as the jacket I was wearing had room for my flybox & camera. Did the vest thing for a few years, didn't care for it.

  4. I have a nice Columbia vest and haven't used it in quite a while. I use a chest pack, but I have a tendency to overload it with stuff I don't really need. I have a lanyard, but haven't tried it yet. I think i would like it though. I'll let you know how it works out when I finally decide to go lighter.

  5. Hey Bill, I use several different things for different situations. For carp fishing I use a lanyard. I use a small selection of flies for carp, so I throw a few in my pocket and put the lanyard on and go. For pond fishing where I need a larger selection of flies, I use a fanny pack. For trout fishing, I use a chest pack because I like to carry several boxes of flies, strike indicators, etc. The only time I used a vest was back when I used to guide and do wade trips on mountain streams. I had to carry everything, and I mean everything, with me. The vest had the capacity to do that, but man it was hot. All things considered, I prefer the lanyard when I can get away with it. Great topic.

  6. I don't have a lanyard so that makes me a vest kind of guy. A vest works in most situations.

  7. Oh man...I must be really old school and still relying on pockets. Can't say enough about how much I appreciate your blog and have awarded you with the Versatile Blogger award. http://coloradocastersblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/and-nominees-are.html

  8. I used a lanyard for a while but had problems with my fly line catching on everything in the tight quarter fishing spots. Also had a problem with it hitting my camera dangling around my neck. I ended up going Johns route with a backpack. I can stash everything in it. Lenses, camera, food, water, mountain money, video camera, extra fly boxes, etc. For light trips I go with a fishing vest. Which still ends up weighing about 10 pounds. My favorite thing though are my cargo pants. The pockets are usually stuffed to the brim :) Tight Lines.

For me the vest is what I use, but after hearing some of you guys suggestions, I may think about changing.

That is one problem I have with the vest, overloading it with things I never use. May try the lanyard.

I got congo pants this year and really like them because of all the pockets. I also like the shirts that go with them.

I appreciate the award. I do try to keep things pretty much in perspcetive as far as fishing is concerned. I try to make most of my post concise and to the point, and I also stick pretty much with fly fishing. Thanks again for the recognition.

The older I get the more I like less weight to carry when I am wading, that is why I am considering the lanyard.

  14. I try to keep everything to a minimum and condensed down to a chest pack. Most of the time I end up with my back pack on as well. It has all my wilderness essentials like toilet paper.

Just as soon as you get on the water you know you should have packed that item, and toilet paper is one of them.

  16. I'm not much of a vest guy, but choose rather to use a pack most of the time. I've never used a lanyard either, but want to give one a try.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful...glad you got some sage advice from others.

I am going trout fishing Friday with a buddy and he has an extra lanyard, I think I will ask to borrow it and see how it works for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions--I too use the fanny pack when I am warm water fishing. The vest can get hot and it can also get heavy if you are on the water for some time.
